White to Play

Published in Chess Puzzles

White’s position looks on the surface to be desperate. However, he remembers that the queen combines the moves of the bishop and the rook. How does that help him mate Black?

Solution:

The rook move and bishop move combination is used in sequence by the queen. I’ve seen this come in handy quite often, and it’s worth putting in your memory bank when you’re thinking: 1.Ng6+ Kg7 [1...hxg6 2.Rxh6+ Kg7 3.Rxg6+ Kh8 4.Qc1 Rf7 5.Bxf7 Rf8 6.Qh6#] 2.Qc1 h5 3.Rxh5 axb3 4.Qh6+ Kf7 5.Qxh7+ Ke8 6.Qe7#
