White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

This game started out innocently enough. Then, Black snatched the pawn on e4 after: 1.e4 Nc6 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 Nf6 4.c3 Nxe4. Can Black get away with that? What would you do as White here?

Solution:

This is one of the oldest tricks in the book. This was a trap laid by White and Black fell into it. White played 5.d5 and Black resigned on the spot as he lost a piece. After the knight moves to e5 or b8, White plays 6.Qa4+ and wins the greedy horse on e4. Something like this to Black’s advantage happened at an Olympiad: Combe,Robert Forbes - Hazenfuss,Wolfgang R [A30]Folkestone ol (Men) Folkestone.1933-- 1.d4 c5 2.c4 cxd4 3.Nf3 e5 4.Nxe5 Qa5+ 0–1
