Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

The key to solving this puzzle is to look at the pawn on g3 and ask yourself, “What does that pawn do?”

The pawn covers the escape squares. Black gives up his bishop to allow the rooks and queen to do their work: 1...Bc5+ 2.bxc5 [2.Nd4 Rh1+ 3.Kxh1 Rh8+ 4.Kg1 Rh1+ 5.Kxh1 Qh8+ 6.Bh7 Qxh7+ 7.Qh5 Qxh5+ 8.Kg1 Qh2#] 2...Rh1+ 3.Kxh1 Rh8+ 4.Bh7 Rxh7+ 5.Qh5 Rxh5+ 6.Kg1 Rh1+ 7.Kxh1 Qh8+ 8.Kg1 Qh2#
