White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

From a King’s Gambit. Black has taken the “poisoned pawn” on b2 and effectively taken his queen away from the defense because she is lured by the prospect of getting a free rook. How does White punish Black for that error?

Solution:

The first thing White has to recognize is that the Black bishop on e7 is pinned from going to f8. Then the solution gets a lot easier: 1.Qf8+ Kd7 2.Be6+ Kxe6 3.Qf5#
