White to Play
Published in Chess Puzzles
In this game from 1946, Hill-Janeway, White comes up with a dramatic and decisive way of winning this game. What was White’s great blow here?
Solution:
The game started out this way: 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.c4 Nf4 4>.d4 Ng6 5.h4 h5 6.Be2 e6 7.Bxh5 Nxh4 8.Qg4 Nf5 (see diagram) and now White came up with a well thought out plan. 9.Qg6 [9.Bxf7+ Kxf7 10.Rxh8 Bb4+] ...Qe7 [9...fxg6 10.Bxg6+ Ke7 11.Bg5#] 10.Bg5 fxg6 11.Bxg6+ Kd8 12.Rxh8 Black Resigned because of: 12...Qxg5 13.Rxf8+ Ke7 14.Re8#
This attack on f7 is quite unique and an object lesson on how to take advantage of its weakness in the opening.
