White to Play

This week is a Back to Basics week, and we’re going to start off with an easy one. White mates in three moves. There are at least three different ways to do it, so you have good odds!

Solution:

It’s good to know how to mate with a king and rook vs. king since you can force mate no matter what the starting position. However, it’s nice to know some small nuances. Here are three solutions: 1.Rh5 Kd8 2.Re5 Kc8 3.Re8# or 1.Rc1 Kb8 2.Ra1 Kc8 3.Ra8# or 1.Re5 Kd8 2.Re6 Kc8 3.Re8# and there are others. This was just a warm-up. The next one will challenge you.
