While wandering through an old volume of the 1910 British Chess Magazine, I came across some game finishes from a century ago and thought I would share them with you. This first one, between Daniouschewski and Granass, from the Lodz Chess Club, is a mating pattern you should recognize if you’ve been coming here any length of time.

Solution:

The first move by Black is really quite nice. Mating attacks are not usually started in this manner, but the bishop on f3, the pinned down situation of the king and the access to the open h-file make it a delightful and possible move as well as being the best move on the board! 1...Kg7 2.Qe3 [2.Qe5+ Qxe5 3.dxe5 Rh8 4.Rfd1 Rh1#] 2...Qxg3+ 3.fxg3 Rg2+ 4.Kh1 Rh8#
