Time for Black to think about his “wish list” we’ve talked about before.


Solution:

This is from an actual game, Zouaghi-Huesmann, Belgium, 2008, as reported in British Chess Magazine of that year. The wish you would have is that 1…Rg1 would be mate if it weren’t for that knight. If you played 1...Rxe2 to that end, White could cross you up with 2.Kxe2! However, this does open another opportunity. That’s why you look at ALL checks and captures: The “attraction” theme with 1…Rg1+ results in an “epaulette” mate with 2.Nxg1 Rf2#.
