White to Play
Published in Chess Puzzles
We have a “simple” little mate in two for you this fine Monday morning. It will drive you crazy!
Solution:
This composition is by John Rice. We picked it up from David Friedgood’s Problem World column in British Chess Magazine in 2011. Friedgood notes that some of the “tries” are enticing: 1.Qe2 d5! Or 1.Qd2 f4! And finally, why not the other pawn capture? 1.exd6 f4 . Thus, we are left with a solution that relates directly back to the failed tries: 1.exf6 Nxf6+ [1...f4 2.Qxh3#; 1...d5 2.Qe5#; 1...c5 2.Qe2#] 2.Rxf6#
