White to Play

White to Play

Look at this position. Your rook has control of the d-file, the queen and bishop have access to Black’s weak dark squares, and the knight…well the knight can hop all over the place like the Easter Bunny. Lots of variations here, so it’s a good Friday puzzle.

Solution:

1.Nf7 e5 [1...Rxg5 2.Nh6#; 1...Rxf7 2.Rd8+ Rf8 3.Qf6 Rxd8 4.Qg7#] 2.Qf6 [Messier is 2.Nh6+ Kg7 3.Qe7+ Kxh6 4.Qxf8+ Kh5 5.Bc1 g5 6.Qe8+ Kh6 7.Qxc8] 2...Rxf7 [2...Qh4 3.Qxh4 Rxf7 4.Rd8+ Kg7 5.Bc1 (5.Rxc8) 5...h5 6.Rxc8 Rd5 7.Qg5 Bb6 8.Re8 Rc5 9.Re6 e4 10.Qxg6+ Kf8 11.Bh6+ Rg7 12.Qxg7#] 3.Rd8+ Rf8 4.Rxf8#
