Black to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

Another sad story about what happens when you move your castled position pawns. Here, Black pieces find homes on the holes created by the pawns having moved. If it weren’t for h2 being available, Black would have a mate on the move. As it is, the mate is pretty quick.

Solution:

1...Qxh4 2.gxh4 [2.Nxd6 Qh1#] 2...Nh3#,/b> solves that h2 problem rather nicely and is the quickest, neatest way to mate White. A bit messier, but also ending in mate, is 1...Qd7 2.e5 Qh3 3.Qxh7+ Kxh7 4.Bd3+ Kh6 5.exd6 Qh1#
