Silverman: Spears jokes not meant to hurt

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- Comedian Sarah Silverman said she was surprised by the response her Britney Spears jokes got at the MTV Video Music Awards show in Las Vegas this month.

"The joke that everyone was upset about -- me calling the kids 'adorable mistakes' -- was the most innocuous joke," Silverman told USmagazine.com. "It never occurred to me that would be deemed hurtful or over the line. I don't want to get into feuds with girls half my age. I'm in it to be funny and not for the drama. It's embarrassing."

Asked what fans can expect when Season 2 of her Comedy Central show, "The Sarah Silverman Program," premieres Oct. 3, Silverman said: "The story lines are ridiculous. It's that contrast that makes the show work -- absurdity played real."

The comedian said there is a chance Angelina Jolie will appear on the show at some point.

"I met her on the lot and she was so cool. There is a chance she'll show up in an episode," Silverman said. "I don't know why but I'm seeing her in an Annie wig."
