KALBARRI, Australia (UPI) -- A young surfing champion in Australia said a dolphin that jumped out of the water and landed on his board seemed to be "almost as shocked" as he was.

Jed Gradisen, 13, Western Australia's under-14 state surfing champion, was being filmed by his father while shredding waves earlier this month off Kalbarri when a group of dolphins jumped out of the water behind him.

"I saw them coming. I was like 'Oh my god, they're coming straight for me.' So I like tried to get out of the way and he just jumped straight into me," Gradisen told STAB magazine. The dolphin landed on my, sort of, shoulder and the back half of my body. The dolphin reacted, really I think, really shocked, almost as shocked as I was really.

Gradisen, who was not injured, said the dolphin may have been more shocked than he was.

"Its nose went straight through my board, it must have hurt a bit. It was rustling around and really didn't know what to do," he said. In my dreams I wouldn't dream about anything like that. Because I think it was just an accident that the dolphin jumped on me. It was just as amazed as I was.

Gradisen said his board was already damaged before the collision and he was paddling back out with a replacement when the dolphin made impact.
