PITTSBURGH (UPI) -- A Pittsburgh man's attempt to impress his date failed horribly, as he found himself suspended in air in a small space between two buildings.

Pittsburgh Public Safety Department said the man attempted to jump between the two buildings before falling about three stories and getting caught in the gap.

Police told KDKA the 22-year-old Pitt was suspended five feet above the ground for more than three hours after getting stuck in the 16-18 inch wide gap between the two buildings.

The man's date called 911 and fire crews broke through the walls of one of the buildings in an attempt to free him.

"It appears there were three walls that we had to go through and also we had people on the roof, one of the paramedics did rappel down the three stories to render assistance and to get a landmark as to where he was," Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said.

The man was eventually taken down and wheeled to an ambulance on a stretcher as he gave two thumbs up to his date.

He suffered a broken ankle during the fall, which required surgery, but Hissrich said he was in good spirits considering the situation.

"He was alert and talking," he said. Obviously, he was here for three and a half to four hours, so he was numb.

One of the business managers said the wall may require serious repair, but it was unclear whether the man would face charges.
