CHELMSFORD, Ontario (UPI) -- Two brothers who came across a bald eagle in a trap in Ontario, Canada, freed the bird and snapped a quick selfie with the iconic raptor.

Michael and Neil Fletcher, brothers from Chelmsford, Ontario, said they were out hunting grouse on Nov. 4 near Windy Lake when they found the bald eagle with one of its talons caught in the claw trap, a type of trap often used by fur trappers.

"It was attached to a stake and the eagle was trying to fly up, but it only had a foot of slack in the chain," Michael Fletcher told the Sudbury Star.

Fletcher said he placed his hoodie over the bird's head to prevent it from attacking while they pressed on the trap's release mechanism.

"Me and my brother just kind of held onto it, and it calmed right down," he said.

Fletcher said the bird was calm when he uncovered its head and cooperative when the brothers decided to snap a selfie.

"It didn't really fuss or give any sign of aggression," Fletcher said. I don't know if it knew we were helping him, or what.

The brothers said the eagle, which did not appear to be injured, flapped into a nearby tree, where it remained until the men departed.

Fletcher said he contacted the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry about the incident.

"They just said thanks for letting it go, and that they would be contacting the trapper to see if he could set the trap differently," he said.
