English tower wails like a banshee in gale-force winds

MANCHESTER, England (UPI) -- A banshee-like howl heard in the city center of Manchester, England, is the result of gale-force winds colliding with the glass blade of the city's tallest building, Beetham Tower.

A video posted to YouTube Sunday highlights the sound -- variously described by observers as a "whistle," a howl and wailing like a banshee -- reverberating from the 47-floor Beetham Tower as gale force winds swept through Manchester.

Engineers have previously carried out repairs and modifications to the structure in an attempt to reduce the occasional noise, which results from the tower's glass blade meeting the wind.

Architect Ian Simpson, who designed the building, apologized for the howling in 2012.

"I am completely aware of the noise because I live at the top of the building," he told the Manchester Evening News. At the end of the day it's not supposed to make noise. We have got to address that because it's causing distress.
