ROSTOV, Russia (UPI) -- A Russian man who heard cries coming from beneath a recently-repaired cobblestone sidewalk rescued a dog named Squirrel from beneath the stones.

Vadim Rustam, who posted the video to YouTube, said in the video's description he and his wife heard whimpering coming from beneath the cobblestones at the foot of the stairs outside a Rostov housing unit where workers had recently repaired a hole in the bricks.

Rustam, who said the hole had been open for three weeks before being repaired, said he and his wife contacted the city, but officials declined to send workers to investigate the whimpering.

The man decided to take action himself, and the video shows him prying up some of the bricks with help from friends and discovered a pregnant dog trapped beneath.

Rustam said the dog, named Belka -- or Squirrel in English -- had apparently chosen the hole in the cobblestones as the location for her den to have puppies. He said the dog had been trapped for about two days with no food or water, but is doing well after her rescue.
