NEW YORK (UPI) -- A conservation charity projected 40-story-tall video clips of endangered species onto the south face of New York's Empire State Building.

The Saturday night event, dubbed "Projecting Change: the Empire State Building," featured footage from director Louie Psihoyos' upcoming documentary, Racing Extinction, being projected onto the New York landmark with design from visual artist Travis Threlkel of Obscura Digital.

The event, which was streamed live on YouTube by the Oceanic Preservation Society, is part of an educational drive aiming to promote conservation of endangered animals.

The featured animals included manta rays, blue whales, birds, tigers and bears in addition to photos of Cecil the lion, a beloved big cat killed in Zimbabwe July 1 by a dentist from the United States.

"Projecting Change" was produced by the Oceanic Preservation Society and Obscura Digital, in collaboration with Discovery Channel, Vulcan Productions, Photo Ark, the Li Ka-Shing Foundation and Empire State Building Trust.

The projections begin at about the 32:40 mark in the video:
