BETHLEHEM, Pa. (UPI) -- A party in South Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, not far from Lehigh University, received a surprise guest in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 27 -- a hairy 300-pound guest, grunting and hungry.

At around 2 a.m., police fielded a flood of calls about a black bear roaming the streets near the intersection of Fifth and Pierce.

"I guess the bear must have gone to the party -- near the party -- and surprised a bunch of people," Police Chief Mark DiLuzio told lehighvalleylive.com.

Police and Pennsylvania Game Commission officers were quickly on the scene, where they surrounded and cornered the bear before tranquilizing the mammal.

A tattoo inside the bear's lip revealed it had traveled from New Jersey. The bear will be safely released into a more remote location.

Game officials confirmed the bear to be the same one spotted on Lehigh's campus early on Friday afternoon. Campus police and school officials issued a warning to students and set up a perimeter around the bear's apparent location, but that barrier was eventually abandoned when it appeared the bear had wandered off.

"It's that time of year when bears start moving around," Edward Shupp, the university police chief, told the Morning Call. This is the first one we've had in years.
