PACIFICA, Calif. (UPI) -- Visitors to a California beach said the carcass of a whale that washed up last week was defaced with graffiti bearing the name of a motorcycle gang.

The sperm whale carcass, which washed up at Mori Point in Pacifica last week, was found Monday to have been spray-painted with the name of the East Bay Rats Motorcycle Club, a Bay Area gang.

"I think it's incredibly sad and unfortunate that someone would take that opportunity to defile nature," beach-goer Savina Hong told KPIX-TV. It's awful. I think it's bad enough what happened to the poor whale.  Why did they have to go and make it worse?

Witnesses said they found chunks of the whale's blubber, left behind following a necropsy last week, had also been set on fire. It was unclear whether the graffiti and fire were connected.
