Police: Coffee-craving parrot distracted driver before crash

UNIONTOWN, Pa. (UPI) -- Pennsylvania State Police said a woman who crashed her car told investigators she was distracted by her coffee-craving parrot's attempts to get into her cup.
Angel Holyfield, 35, who crashed her car into a guard rail about 4:52 p.m. Tuesday in South Union Township, told police she was distracted when her pet parrot pecked at the lid of her cup in an attempt to reach the coveted coffee inside.
Police said there was bird feed in the cup holder next to the coffee cup and bird feathers were scattered through the vehicle.
Holyfield was treated at Uniontown Hospital for a broken right arm and facial lacerations resulting from the vehicle's airbag deploying.
Police said the parrot was safely removed from the vehicle. They did not say whether the bird sustained any injuries from the crash.
Holyfield, whose Honda Accord incurred severe front-end damage in the crash, was not charged with any infraction, Trooper Stefani Lucas told the Uniontown Herald-Standard.
Lucas said the state does not have any laws barring pet owners from allowing their animals to freely wander their vehicles, but she cautioned such situations could lead to drivers becoming distracted.
