FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (UPI) -- Police in Washington state said a man seen on video getting out of his car to stop a toddler from running into traffic was tracked down and thanked by officers.

The Federal Way Police Department said surveillance video from Thursday showed a motorist stopped at an intersection get out of his car and block the path of a 4-year-old boy who was running toward a busy street.

The man left after handing the boy off to a nearby police officer, but police later said they were trying to track the man down to thank him.

Sean Deeds was identified Friday and police shook his hand in thanks.

"We wanted to meet you and shake your hand, not only from the police department, but from me as a father as well," Cmrd. Casey Jones told Deeds in a video shot by KOMO-TV.

Deeds said he didn't come forward earlier because he "kind of didn't want to put myself out there, and get any credit for anything that I don't think there's really any credit due for."
