Indiana man with 68 license suspensions sentenced to jail

POLAND, Ind. (UPI) -- An Indiana man whose driver's license has been suspended 68 times in 14 years was sentenced to serve time in the county jail.
Poland resident Dustin Wheeler, 33, was sentenced by a Putnam County judge to serve 20 days in the county jail after he pleaded guilty to driving with a suspended license, but prosecutor Tim Bookwalter said Wheeler will only serve 10 days behind bars due to a state law.
"I was a state trooper for 27 years," Judge Denny Bridges said, and I've never seen someone with 68 suspensions.
Bookwalter said Wheeler qualifies for habitual offender status, but has avoided jail time until now.
"He's had driving left of center, he's had not wearing a seat belt, you name it, he gets it. He doesn't pay his fees, he gets a further suspension, he gets pulled over and gets a ticket for driving on a suspension, and it just keeps going," Bookwalter told WRTV.
Wheeler said he is a good driver, despite his 68 suspensions.
"I actually drove three years, no incident, but they're going to pop you when you least expect it. It's going to happen," Wheeler said.
Wheeler, who will also have to pay more than $1,000 in fines to restore his license, said he plans to turn himself in to serve his sentence next week.
