CHICAGO (UPI) -- A Chicago man who came home to find 15 pounds of ice chunks had crashed through his ceiling said it may have been a megacryometeor, an ice ball from space.

John Connors of the Ravenswood Manor district on Chicago's north side said neighbors heard a crashing sound while he was at work around noon Tuesday and he returned home to find bowling ball-sized chunks of ice had crashed through his roof and spread debris through his living room and bedroom.

"When I walked into my apartment the chair that is normally against the wall was pushed into the middle of the living room," Connors told the Lake View Patch. There was ice everywhere. I could see the sky through the hole in my ceiling.

Doris Patiz, Connors' neighbor, said the noise from the man's apartment sounded like a major disaster.

"I hear this terrible blast, I thought it was a gas explosion," Patiz told WLS-TV.

Connors said his cat is lucky to have evaded injury and he believes he "would have been killed" if he had been home at the time of the incident.

Brian McNally, a friend who helped Connors clean up his apartment, theorized the object may have been a megacryometeor, a meteor composed of a giant ice ball.

Connors said the ice may have also been frozen liquid fallen from a plane flying above his apartment. He said he is keeping three of the large ice chunks in his freezer in hope of determining their origins.
