New York transit poster takes aim at 'manspreading'

NEW YORK (UPI) -- New York transit officials are taking aim at "manspreading" on the subway with a poster urging train riders to close their legs.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority poster depicts a cartoon subway rider with his legs spread far apart to take up multiple seats with a caption reading, "Dude... stop the spread, please. It's a space issue."

The poster is part of an MTA campaign to discourage space hogging by backpack wearers and "manspreaders," the latter of which has been the subject of numerous blogs and Twitter crusaders aiming to publicly shame those who spread their legs to take up multiple seats on crowded trains.

Paul Fleuranges, the MTA's senior director for corporate and internal communications, told The New York Times officials were careful to select the right tone for the campaign.

"I had them add the dude part," he said, because I think, 'Dude, really?'
