Black bears fight on suburban New Jersey street

ROCKAWAY, N.J. (UPI) -- A viral video shows a pair of black bears fighting tooth-and-claw on a suburban New Jersey street in what experts suggested could be a mating competition.

The video, said to be taken Aug. 14 and uploaded to YouTube this week, shows the bears duking it out on a residential street in Rockaway for 6 1/2 minutes.

The person taking the video appears to have stayed inside their car during the bear brawl.

Kelcey Burguess, principal wildlife biologist and Black Bear Project leader for the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, said the bears in the video are likely males fighting over a mate.

"They're probably fighting or playing because there's a good-looking lady in the area," Burguess told NJ.com. It's really common to have fights during mating season.
