CARDIFF-BY-THE-SEA, Calif. (UPI) -- Eric Barretto's plans for a romantic proposal went awry on Sunday, when the hot air balloon carrying him and his now-fiancee crash landed near a beach north of San Diego.

Barretto had just proposed when strong winds pushed the balloon out to sea.

Encinitas Marine Safety Capt. Larry Giles told The Los Angeles Times that the balloon pilot decided to make an emergency landing near the shore and tossed a rope to surfers on the beach.

They pulled the balloon safely to shore. No one was injured.

"It's unforgettable," Barretto told NBC San Diego. I don't know if we'll do it again.
