ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (UPI) -- Three Florida teens picked the wrong car to try to burglarize.

An undercover St. Petersburg detective was watching an area of town after police received reports of teens going around and opening the doors of parked cars.

As he sat in the car, the detective observed three teenagers -- girls ages 13 and 15 and a 14-year-old boy -- trying the doors of parked cars in the area.

Unaware that he was inside, the teens tried the door of the detective's car. The detective was unfazed by getting involved in the action and arrested the trio.

"Sometimes you can find yourself in the middle of one of these situations as it's taking place," police spokesman Mike Puetz told the Tampa Bay Times.

All three teens were charged with possession of burglary tools and burglary on a vehicle. The male suspect received additional charges because he tried to run away from the officer.

It is suspected that the teens are involved with previous car burglaries in St. Petersburg.
