White to Play
Published in Chess Puzzles
An endgame composition by Henri Rinck. If each side pushes their passed pawns both will queen in three moves, but Black will have a check. White has to figure out how to deal with that AND the Black knight coming up to halt White’s pawn.
Solution:
There are lots of variations, but White wins by the huge power and agility of the queen: 1.e6 Nc4 [1...h3 2.Be5 Nc4 3.Bc7 h2 4.Bxh2 Nd2 5.e7 Nf3+ 6.Kf2 Nxh2 7.e8Q Ng4+ 8.Ke1 e3 9.Qg6+]2.Be5 Nxe5 3.e7 Ke3 4.e8Q Nf3+ 5.Kf1 h3 6.Qe6 h2 7.Qh6+ Kd3 8.Kf2 Kd4 9.Qd6+ Kc4 10.Qc6+ Kd3 11.Qa6+ Kd4 12.Qa1+ Kd3 13.Qb1+ Kd4 14.Qd1+ Kc5 15.Ke3 and the pawns will fall.
