This week, we’re going to look at some of the fun they used to have in the 19th century with unusual problems. We’re starting with one of the simpler versions. It may look obvious, but isn’t. Be alert!

Solution:

Only one move starts on the winning road: 1.Ka5 [ If you tried 1.b6 Bxc6! (1...cxb6 2.Kxb6) 2.bxc7+ Kxc7 3.Ka7 Bxb7 Stalemate!) 1...Ka7 2.b6+ cxb6+ 3.Kb5 Kb8 [3...Bxc6+ 4.Kxc6 Kb8 5.Kxd6 (5.Kxb6=) 5...b5 6.Kc5 Kc7 7.Kxb5 Kxb7 8.Kc5 Kc7 9.Kxd5 Kd7 10.Ke5 Kc6 11.Kxe4 Kd6 12.Kxe3] 4.Kxb6 Bxc6 5.Kxc6 Ka7 6.Kc7 with an easy win
