White to Play

When we were looking at Dan Heisman’s positions for determining whether a move was safe, a position occurred to me that I had written about years ago. In the following position after 1.e4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.exd5 Nxd5 4.Bc4 Nb6 5.Bb3 Nc6 6.Nf3 e5 7.d3 Bg4 8.h3 Bh5. If you have been paying attention to this column over the years you know we have covered the IDEA of playing 9.Nxe5 here. Now the question is, is it safe? If you met this position over the board, would you be able to figure out if 9.Nxe5 were a winning line?

- Solution: The game, Vucinic-Djurovic, after White figured it out, went 9.Nxe5 Bxd1 10.Bxf7+ Ke7 11.Bg5+ Kd6 12.Ne4+ Kxe5 13.f4+ Kd4 14.Rxd1 Qxg5 15.c3+ Ke3 16.0–0 Qh4 17.Rf3+ Ke2 18.Rd2+ Ke1 19.Rf1# Quite a road trip for the Black king!
