Black to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

This position is from a game, Schatz-Giegold, 1928, used in Artur Yusupov’s book Build Up Your Chess. It seems as though Black is in a bit of a pickle as his queen is attacked by both rook and bishop. How does he squirm out? BTW, I had a tough time figuring out how they got to that position. If you look closely, you’ll see what I mean. Other than both players were blind as bats, I would welcome a reasonable explanation of the previous few moves to this position.

The way Black weasels out of this mess is to mate White! 1...Rh1+ 2.Kg3 [2.Kxh1 Qxh3+ 3.Kg1 Qxg2#] 2...Qh4+ 3.Rxh4+ gxh4#
