This is a mate in six that obviously involves a pawn promotion, but the “6” should give you a hint of how to go about it.


If it’s a mate in six, then a queen promotion was not involved, so what was? A composition by S. Rubin in 1960. Two knights may not mate, but three can! Worth playing out on a board: 1.Ndf5 Kh8 2.f7 Kh7 3.f8N+ Kh8 4.Nd7 Kh7 5.Nf6+ Kh8 6.Ng6#
