White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

Yes! White’s going to win this! One special accommodation, though: White gets to pick up his king and pawn and put them anywhere he wants and THEN make the first move to lead White to victory!

Solution:

Maybe I should have done this for Halloween as a trick or treat. It is both! This clever concoction was conceived by H. Cohn. White puts his king on e5 and pawn on b6 and then begins: 1.bxa7 Na6 (otherwise 2.axb8=N mate!) 2.a8=N and mate next move with 3.Nb6#.
