This puzzle is based on a position in The Art of Attack in Chess by V. Vukovic. The book is considered one of the best instructional books of this genre. The position itself is artificial, but contains some interest. What’s the quickest mate you can find here?


Solution:

Vukovic’s point was that there were four mating patterns in this one position. Thus, you have to be aware of a variety of possibilities even in the simplest positions. 1.Qd7 Kf6 [1...gxf5 2.Bg7+ Ke4 3.Qxd4#; 1...g5 2.Bg7#; 1...Ne6 2.Qxe6#] 2.Bg4 Ke5 [2...g5 3.Qg7#] 3.Bg7+ Ke4 4.Qxd4#
