Black to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

This is a gem of a save by Black, from the game Bannik-Vistanetskis, Moscow, 1961. The position certainly looks like Black is in big trouble, but he finds an ingenious solution.

Solution:

Black’s solution is using the stalemate threat in the position-- 1...Rg2+ 2.Kf6 [2.Kh6 Rf2 3.Kg6 Rg2+ and we’re back where we started]2...a1=Q+ 3.Rxa1 Ra2 4.Rb1 Rb2 5.Rf1 Rf2 6.Rc1 Rc2 and on and on. White can’t take without it being stalemate. How good it must have felt for Black to find that over the board and how awful White must have felt!
