White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

White plays a move in this game that pretty much ends the game. Michael Adams’ opponent, Giorgi Giorgadze, hung on for a few moves, then resigned. What was the move?

Solution:

1.Qd2 Qc6 [The point of the offer is: 1...Qxd2 2.Ra8+ Bd8 3.Rxd8# A great deflection move by the queen.] 2.Qh6+ Ke8 3.Qe6 Black Resigns. All he would have is: 3...Rxf5 [3...Kf8 4.Ra7 Qe8 5.Qh6+ Kg8 6.Qg6+ Kf8 7.Nxe7 Qxe7 (7...Rxe7 8.Qf6+) 8.Ra8+ Qe8 9.Qxd6+ Re7 10.Rxe8+ Kxe8 11.Qb8+ and it's not even a fight.] 4.Qxf5 Qb7 5.g4 and the pawn runs to g8. The trapped Black king is helpless.
