White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

This composition was one of Irving Chernev’s favorites. There is a humorous point to it at the end. It’s White to play and draw. Composition by Bogdassaryanz.

Solution:

The very funny and quite creative solution is: 1.h8=Q Rh2+ 2.Kg5 Rxh8 3.g7+ Kxg7 4.f6+ Kh7 [ If 4...Kf8, White is stalemated] 5.Kh5 and now Black is stalemated!
