Solution:
The members of Group A are 7 of the 8 battleships that were stationed at Pearl Harbor when Japan launched a surprise attack on 7 December 1941, which led to the United States entering World War 2. The missing member is California.
Note: Although the USS Utah was also stationed at Pearl Harbor, the Utah was no longer classified as a battleship, having been converted to a mobile target.
Hint: The number of members, 12 and 7, refer to December 7.
