Black to Play

Here is another position from practical play. You are Black. What is your best continuation here? There are several very good ones, but we're looking for the most precise line. Most good players will tell you that once they find a good line, they look for a better one. This position is ideal for pracice in that it has many possibilities for Black.

Solution:

(From an off-hand game that started out--1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qa5 4.Nf3 Nf6 5.Be2 Nc6 6.0–0 Bg4 7.d3 e6 8.a3 Bd6 9.Ng5 h6 10.Nge4 Nxe4 11.dxe4 0–0–0 12.Qe1 Nd4 13.Bd3

And now the best move is:

13...Nf3+ [Give yourself a little pat on the back if you saw 13...Bxh2+ 14.Kxh2 and either 14...Nf3+ and 14...Qh5+ will both win, but not as quickly as the main line.] 14.gxf3 [14.Kh1 Qh5 15.Bf4 Bxf4 16.h3 Bxh3 17.gxf3 Qxf3+] 14...Qh5 15.h4 [15.f4 Bf3 16.Ne2 Qh3; 15.e5 Bxf3 16.Bf5 exf5 17.Ne4 Qg4+ 18.Ng3 Qh3; 15.fxg4 Qxh2#] 15...Qxh4 16.f4 Bf3 17.Ne2 Qh1#
