White to Play and Mate in Three

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

This is our last composition by Marble. It was a first prize winner in 1909.

Solution:

1.Rg2 Rxg2 [1...Qxg2 2.Bxf5 Qb2 3.Nb6#; 1...Bxg2 2.Bb7+ Ke6 (2...Kc4 3.Nab2#) 3.Nac5#; 1...b2 2.Nac5 Qh6 3.Be6#] 2.Nac5 Kc4 3.Be6#

The cooperation of the bishops and knights is exceptional. There are many other alternatives that we decided not to list since they pretty much end up the same way as the lines given. Black is helpless to prevent the knight or bishop mates in every line.
