White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

I ran across this game and couldn’t help but be intrigued by White’s exploitation of the pin of the knight on f6. Haven’t see anything like it.

Solution:

The game started out this way-- Dur-DeBoer, Amsterdam, 1980:1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.g3 Bg7 5.Bg2 0–0 6.Nge2 e5 7.0–0 Nc6 8.dxe5 dxe5 9.Bg5 Nd4 10.Nxd4 exd4 11.Nd5 c6 (See Diagram) 12.e5 cxd5 13.Qxd4 Black Resigns because of: 13...Qa5 14.exf6 Bh8 15.Qxd5 Qxd5 16.Bxd5 and Black will have to play effectively a piece down because the Bh8 can't get out and Black can't do anything about it.
