The comment that the Christian Church opposed the fork seems a bit misleading... The Cardinal who opposed the fork was from Venice and under the authority of Rome. The fork was brought from Constantinople where forks had been in use already for some time. There are no polemics in the Church of Constantinople about fork use... it was an accepted practice in Byzantine culture by that time and had been invented by the Greeks.
