Canada issues 'Nutural Slim' warning
Federal officials said the recalled over-the-counter product, manufactured by Yingtai TCM Pharma Co., contains undeclared pharmaceutical ingredients identified as sibutramine or nearly identical to sibutramine.
"Sibutramine is a prescription drug used to treat obesity," Health Canada said. "The use of sibutramine may cause serious side-effects, including cardiovascular reactions such as increased blood pressure, chest pain and stroke. Other side effects include dry mouth, difficulty sleeping and constipation. Sibutramine should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare practitioner."
The agency said sibutramine should not be taken by people who have had a heart attack, coronary artery disease, heart-related chest pain, irregular heart beats, congestive heart failure, a stroke or symptoms of a stroke, or by individuals with controlled or poorly controlled high blood pressure.
People who are depressed or have a psychiatric illness, along with women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant, should also avoid taking Nutural Slim, which is not authorized for sale in Canada, officials said.
