Chemo linked to fatigue in breast cancer

TAMPA, Fla. (UPI) -- Breast cancer survivors who received both chemotherapy and radiotherapy report the most severe and prolonged fatigue, a U.S. study found.

Dr. Paul Jacobsen of the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla., tracked 221 women with early stage breast cancer treated with either radiography or a combination of chemotherapy and radiography and 221 age- and geographically matched healthy women at two, four and six months after treatment.

The researchers expected to find the greatest difference in fatigue scores just after treatment, diminishing with time but they found that breast cancer patients who received both chemotherapy and radiotherapy had heightened fatigue.

The findings, published in the journal Cancer, provides strong evidence that women with non-metastatic breast cancer treated with adjuvant chemotherapy are at significantly greater risk for severe fatigue.
