Study: Newborns need more pain relief
A study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, said newborns face an average of 16 painful or stressful procedures each day, USA Today reported Wednesday. Most of the time the procedures, such as needle sticks or bandage removals, are done without painkillers.
The study, led by French researcher Ricardo Carbajal, looked at 430 infants in Paris hospitals. Co-author K.J.S. Anand of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences said doctors should provide acetaminophen, anesthetic creams or sugar to block pain signals in the brain, the newspaper said.
