NHL: Boston 5, Colorado 4

DENVER (UPI) -- David Krejci scored on a wrist shot with 2:36 remaining Thursday, boosting the Boston Bruins to a wild 5-4 victory over Colorado in their season opener.

Krejci's goal gave the Bruins their fourth lead of the night.

Colorado outshot Boston 38-19, but Avalanche goaltender Peter Budaj could make only 15 saves.

Colorado's fortunes this year rest heavily with Budaj, who took over the No. 1 goaltender position when Jose Theodore left as a free agent and signed with Washington.

Boston twice took the lead in the first period only to see Colorado tie it and the game was deadlocked at 3-3 heading into the third period.

Boston's Michael Ryder scored 5:36 into the final period, but Jordan Leopold tied it with 9:43 to play. That set up the game-winning shot by Krejci, who scored just six goals all of last season.
