Federer advances to U.S. Open semis

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. (UPI) -- Roger Federer recorded a straight-set win against Gilles Muller in a men's quarterfinal match Thursday at the U.S. Open tennis tournament.

The reigning four-time Open champion won the match by scores of 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) to advance a record 18th straight semifinal in a major tournament.

He captured the first set in a tiebreak after neither player was able to break the other's serve. He assumed control in the second set by taking a 5-4 lead, and the third set also ended in a tiebreak, with Federer winning five of the match's six points.

"It was really difficult," the second-seeded Federer said. "(But) I'm really happy with the way I pulled it out at the end, because I thought it was going to four sets."

Muller hit 16 service aces, but sank to 0-3 lifetime against Federer.
