Serena Williams outlasts sister

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. (UPI) -- Serena Williams outlasted her sister Venus in two tiebreaks Wednesday to reach the semifinals of the U.S. Open.

After falling to her sister in the title match at Wimbledon this year, Serena emerged with a 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (9-7) victory that set up a semifinal meeting with Dinara Safina.

Serena moved in front of Venus 9-8 in their career meetings and their matches in grand slam events now stand at 5-5. All four of Serena's previous victories over Venus in major championships had come in the finals.

Venus won this event in 2000 and 2001, but has not reached the championship match since 2002.

It was only the third time the sisters had ever met in the quarterfinals of a tournament.

Safina advanced to the semifinals by defeating Flavia Pennetta 6-2, 6-3.

The other semifinal will send Jelena Jankovic against Elena Dementieva. The women's semifinals will take place Friday.
