Western expats run afoul of UAE laws
With the case of a British couple arrested and jailed for having sex on a Dubai beach making headlines, other Europeans and Americans are advising expatriates and visitors to be more aware of the country's Muslim laws and customs, ABC News reported Wednesday.
One anonymous British expat who knew the arrested woman told ABC News, "In the Arab world, being an English girl now means you can't hold down your drink, you're an alcoholic and you're a slut. I look down on it … the blatant disrespect because she thought she was above the law."
A week after the beach arrest, Dubai police told reporters they had recently detained 79 people for violations of public decency, mainly centered in the city's active expatriate bar scene.
"The religion and culture is tied up with the state here in the UAE," Laurence Kraenzlin, a marketing director with Dubai's Raffles Hotel, told the broadcaster. "You have to respect the local culture. It is a different world."

If we in the USA have to adjust to Muslim beliefs and morals, then the people of Dubai should adjust to the beliefs and morals of the foreigners in their midst. Turnabout is fair play.
